DIWAN ARUN NANDA
A Gold Medallist from the first batch of graduates (1964-1966) of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Diwan Arun Nanda is a doyen of Indian advertising.
Mr. Nanda joined Hindustan Lever Ltd. in 1966, where he worked on helping shape iconic brands like Surf, Rin, Lux, Rexona, Lifebouy, and Liril.
In 1973, after a stellar six-year stint with Hindustan Lever Ltd, Diwan Arun Nanda, along with Ajit Balakrishnan & Mohammed Khan, founded Rediffusion. The work created under his leadership till date is counted amongst the finest ever created in the industry.
Mr. Nanda has been felicitated with the "Distinguished Alumni Award" by his Alma Mater-Loyola College, Chennai, and also by IIM-Ahmedabad. He was a recipient of the Government of India Merit Scholarship. He was the Leader of the Indian delegation to the Asian Advertising Congress at Tokyo in 1993, and President of the AAAI from 1993-1995 and 1999-2000.
For his outstanding contribution to Indian advertising, Mr. Nanda was also awarded the AAAI-Premnarayen Award. He was advisor to the late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and also a Member of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Committee (a part of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government of India).
When the Calcutta Advertising Club, India, inducted Mr. Nanda in their Hall of Fame, the citation read: “Very few amongst us can achieve in a handful of lifetimes what he has managed to do in a couple of decades…. From the very beginning, his approach to the business has been loose, spontaneous, and serendipitous, and he works quickly and instinctively. Central to his success has always been his awesome respect for the unusual, the brilliant. Which probably explains why his agency’s work is, for many, the unofficial yardstick by which advertising is judged.”
In July 2018, in a bold move characteristic of him, Diwan Arun Nanda, along with Ajit Balakrishnan bought back the shares held in Rediffusion by the global partners Young & Rubicam and Dentsu, thus making Rediffusion India’s largest independent agency.
